Who We Are
At The Last Word we buy, sell, and trade first-rate secondhand books and media!
The idea for The Last Word emerged from the collaboration of Liz Pope and her two sons, Matt and Marshall Hicks. Before opening a store of their own, they worked at a bookstore in Winston-Salem that was similar to The Last Word in function, but they had a vision for a book and media store in which they could implement ideas of their own. They wanted to provide a space for education, entertainment, community, and a welcoming atmosphere punctuated by good customer service.
The Last Word opened in November 2010. Over the years, the store has evolved into a community hub. Through local artists, authors, musicians, and crafters, we’ve created a local outpost for the arts. We’ve held events of all types, from art shows to author signings, from open mic nights and slam poetry to painting classes, and even a wedding. We’ve added a coffee shop, cases for Magic: The Gathering players to buy and trade, and multiple new sections and displays. Whether you are a bibliophile, gamer, or movie buff, we just might have what you’ve been trying to find.
